Who We Help
Indigenous children, Northern QLD

Before the project was established, children from the indigenous community went to school without being able to hold a pencil or use scissors. They were able to look for food in the bush and climb trees but had difficulty reading and writing.

The indigenous children would start school, significantly behind their classmates. The project, established in 2009, helps indigenous children, aged 0-5 get the best start to their education.

Today, after two years of operation, children attending the program, aged 3-4, are able to read and write and can enjoy a smooth transition into primary school. Their learning outcomes have improved and the community has a sense of pride about the success of the centre. Their indigenous teacher is able to tailor the curriculum to their unique culture and lifestyle and involve the children’s parents and caregivers in the education process.
