‘Barista Best’

‘Barista Best’

Elisha Mauger, Operations Trainer from Gloria Jean’s Coffees, received the prestigious title of National Cup Tasting Champion at the AustralAsian Specialty Coffee Association (AASCA) Cup Tasting Championships, held earlier this month in Melbourne.

After correctly identifying seven out of the eight coffees correctly, Elisha equaled first place and was awarded the title with her time of 3 minutes, 17 seconds.

Prior to the competition, Elisha completed weeks of training, setting up her own ‘cup tasting’ competitions at the Gloria Jean’s Coffees Support Office, as well as eating foods that would help cleanse her palate a week before the competition – something which proved to be of a winning formula. “I wanted to be as prepared as I could, and give myself the best chance,” said Elisha. “Thank you to my support team, Mimma, who inspired me to compete and Craig, Melita, Rie, Jolene and Maddison who cheered me on in Melbourne!”

But its Elisha’s days as a barista that have developed her palate, skill and accuracy to be Australia’s best in cup tasting. Her journey with Gloria Jean’s Coffees began in Western Australia, where her family operates Gloria Jean’s Coffees Rockingham. After recently moving to Sydney, Elisha still calls Rockingham home. “I wish my family could have been there in person. I can’t wait to see them and celebrate this win!”
